Have You Ever Seen A Duck in a Tree?

heard the familiar noise as soon as I stepped out of the truck. “Jeeeeb. Jeeeb. Jeeep.” I wasn’t thinking about anything other than getting the mail and letting the dogs out when I heard the sound. It kind of caught me by surprise. “Jeeeb jeeeeb.” I know I know that sound….  I looked for the noise and aha, there it was, in the old ash tree across the road. Have you ever seen a duck in a tree? Wood ducks perch in trees in spite of their webbed feet. This drake (male) was quite beautiful and very vocal. I think he was calling to the hen.

have you ever seen a duck in a tree, wood ducks, woodies, nestinghave you ever seen a duck in a tree, wood duck, woodie, preening, ash treehave you ever seen a duck in a tree, wood ducks flying, what does a wood duck sound likeI looked for a female but couldn’t find her. She might have been in the knot hole in the old ash tree, checking it out as a potential nest. I retrieve the camera from the house and took a few photos of the drake and checked the mail. And then, “oo-eek  oo-eek oo-eek.” Then hen. I turned back just in time to see them flying away and was able to snap one photo of her on the wing. I haven’t worked much this week so I haven’t been near a window to watch out for them. As much as I wish they’d nest there so I could easily observe, the hole is too high. I think about the tiny fluff balls leaping out of the hole and tumbling over branches as they fall to the ground. I know…they’re built for it but probably not that from that height.

How about you? Have you ever seen a duck in a tree? What kind?

Did you know some ducks perch in trees? Wood ducks do. This pair was hanging out in an old ash tree across the road.

  1. Ha! On our way to church one morning several years ago I saw three wood ducks in a tree. I made the mistake of saying something to my family, after which I got jibed terribly. After all, who ever heard of a duck in a tree? And now, even though I’ve been proven correct, it’s still a favorite family joke. They scoured the internet for pictures of elephants in trees and such, and said, “See ma, you can find anything on the internet!”

Never commented before, but I’m a fellow Mainer. Stumbled on your blog a few months ago and really enjoy it!

  2. Yes, I have seen a pair of wood ducks fly into a tree while I was deer hunting one day and could not believe it. They do make an interesting sound and they just looked out of place! You never know what you will see when you are in the woods!! Thanks for sharing.

  3. What a wonderful thing to see! We used to have wood ducks in our stream out back, but now the mallards have taken over and the wood ducks just stop by for the night and then fly on to somewhere else. They are the most beautiful ducks I believe!
