heard the familiar noise as soon as I stepped out of the truck. “Jeeeeb. Jeeeb. Jeeep.” I wasn’t thinking about anything other than getting the mail and letting the dogs out when I heard the sound. It kind of caught me by surprise. “Jeeeb jeeeeb.” I know I know that sound…. I looked for the noise and aha, there it was, in the old ash tree across the road. Have you ever seen a duck in a tree? Wood ducks perch in trees in spite of their webbed feet. This drake (male) was quite beautiful and very vocal. I think he was calling to the hen.
I looked for a female but couldn’t find her. She might have been in the knot hole in the old ash tree, checking it out as a potential nest. I retrieve the camera from the house and took a few photos of the drake and checked the mail. And then, “oo-eek oo-eek oo-eek.” Then hen. I turned back just in time to see them flying away and was able to snap one photo of her on the wing. I haven’t worked much this week so I haven’t been near a window to watch out for them. As much as I wish they’d nest there so I could easily observe, the hole is too high. I think about the tiny fluff balls leaping out of the hole and tumbling over branches as they fall to the ground. I know…they’re built for it but probably not that from that height.
How about you? Have you ever seen a duck in a tree? What kind?
