Maine Moose Hunt – Opening Day

Maine Moose Hunt – Opening Day

Maine Moose Hunt – Opening Day The number of moose we saw while scouting was discouragingly low. We were up at 4 am on Sunday and out the door 30 minutes later. We rode The Golden Road and a lot of the side roads on the Zone 9 side near Chesuncook Lake. Steve made breakfast sandwiches on the tailgate – English muffins with eggs, bacon, ham and cheese. Later, tailgate lunch was beef and barely soup with lots of veggies…

Our Maine Moose Hunt – Scouting in the North Maine Woods

Our Maine Moose Hunt – Scouting in the North Maine Woods

Our Maine Moose Hunt A Maine moose hunt is something hunters from all over hope for, wait for, dream of, apply for, and one that few of us get. More than 50,000 people entered the lottery in 2018 and around 2,500 of us were drawn. It’s one thing to have your name drawn and something else to have an opening available in your zone and gender choices. I’d been applying for bull or cow, either, just please give me a…

Rosemary Garlic Moose Roast

Rosemary Garlic Moose Roast

Rosemary Garlic Moose Roast I love a good French dip sandwich. Heck of a way to start a moose roast recipe, eh? The first ingredient in the sandwich is thin slices of Rosemary Garlic Moose Roast. A generous friend who hunts with a bow filled his moose tag again this year. He sent a cooler with meat and I returned it with bread. We definitely got the better end of this deal so I’ll be sending bread and baked goods…

Hello Moose! – Ms. Moose Comes to Call

Hello Moose! – Ms. Moose Comes to Call

Hello Moose! Well hello moose! This cow moose strolled through the orchard and dropped in for a photo bomb. She’s wandered all over the homestead. Like the deer, it’s good to see them after a long winter and know they survived the snow as ticks. I have pictures of a porcupine that wouldn’t stand still and pose, and an uncute baby coming up soon. Uncute…that’s a nice way to put it.

Moose Browse – Late Winter in Maine’s Woods

Moose Browse – Late Winter in Maine’s Woods

Moose Browse It’s still very much winter here in northeastern Maine. Snow is measured in feet in parts of our woodlot. Branches I don’t notice when the ground is bare have to be ducked under now. The bobcat is still hunting snowshoe hare in sight of the house and now, there’s a fisher passing through. I find their tracks in the snow. And speaking of tracks in the snow, last weekend I found tracks that made us stop the truck…

Young Bull Moose on an Afternoon Stroll

Young Bull Moose on an Afternoon Stroll

Young Bull Moose A young bull moose visits the food plot on his way to somewhere more interesting. He’s been here night and day, always coming into and leaving the food plot in the same directions. On Tuesday he swung a left at the Y and walked past another camera. We’re game camera junkies. They’re all over the place. Living with wildlife is never dull and usually a joy. I’d like to see this little guy so I’m thinking of…
